Windows 10 'reserved storage'
« on: January 08, 2019, 05:03:14 pm »
Just reading this story: https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-windows-10-to-grab-7gb-of-your-storage-so-big-updates-dont-fail

and was wondering what ever happened to Windows? 7 GB of disc space just to install some updates? The graphic on that page suggests that the whole system fits into 5.5 GB but you need 7 GB just for updates? Gosh I remember working on multi-user systems that only had 20 MB of storage for the whole system. Granted it didn't do half of what Windows does but wow, things sure have changed.

Win 10 shows MS has decided disk space is no longer a consideration for its consumers, so they don't bother managing it. Most users are losing a lot more than 7g to Win updates these days.

Some ideas --

1- Turn off the "feature" that by default makes your Win 10 computer an update server for other people --

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2955491/windows/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-using-your-pcs-bandwidth-to-update-strangers-systems.html

2-  Regain 10G from the Oct 2018 update --

3-  Follow the standard advice on reducing Win 10 space usage by anywhere from 10-30g --

Wow, thanks for the tips!

Hard to understand why people still use Windows except it's a monopoly. I like it but it's beginning to feel like bloatware.

Essentially, your PC is controlled by Win10 to be a Bittorrent type server node by default?

That is just unbelievable.  MS really overstepped its bounds with this.  Thanks for posting this.

Pretty soon Windows 7 will be obsolete and I'll have to go to Windows 10.  I'd use something else, but all my other software depends on Windows.

Lets all say it together - Linux or bust.  >:D

If you migrate to Win10 you will be sorry. I use it every day at work and it blows.

Haha yes we know it blows! But sometimes you're stuck using that.

As for the BitTorrent type server, I remember hearing about that before but is Windows 10 the first version to do that?

That is correct.. there is that Windows 10 app you can install that will turn off all that BS, supposedly.

This article is from 2015 and Win10 interface has changed substantially since then - but you can still navigate through basically the same areas.

I ran O&O ShutUp10 app and it does some of that and a lot more. Like telemetry.
