Where are they getting the funds to run this operation? It is expensive. who would pay them to store data on every gulag user in the world?

1) Advertising (you know, like the Adwords I posted about my own experiences with which nobody replied to. :P ) Adwords is a HUGE generator of revenue.

2) US government three letter acronym agencies OF COURSE.

(1) I get, completely. However, it does not make sense if you think a bit about the situation under the surface, why would the investors care about storing logs from every gulag user in the world? Just for business purposes? Data mining?

I am going to take a guess that (2) is considerably more likely.

gulag sold their soul on day 1 and that's what made them so wildly successful versus others. that's the only plausible explanation.

You'd need to understand quite a bit more about Google search's business model which means HOW they make their money.

Google became the top search engine because it wasted user's time the least by having the best search results.

You do understand that fact, right? Remember using something like AltaVista.net in 1999? You had to search and THEN scroll through pages of crap results to find what you needed, even when your search was pretty exactly stated.

Google solved that problem.  In direct market  response, almost all other search engines went out of business and Google now sells its web index data to other search vendors like Bing.

Google then leverages its direct knowledge of what billions of individuals search for daily by selling advertising directly to advertisers. You get THAT, right?

Google basically applies EXACTLY the same rigor to returning the best matching ads in response to searches that it does with returning normal organic non commercial search results.

In other words Adwords ads that advertisers are paying through the nose for expecting good results are displayed to the highest probability search users.

SO... In order to have the most lucrative possible advertising platform on earth, Google uses analytics - "big data" - millions (probably) of terabytes of individual user queries and facts about those users - the same data you're wondering about - to choose when and how to display search ads in real time.

THAT IS THE MOTIVATION RIGHT THERE MAKING ADWORDS (GOOGLE SEARCH ADS) THE HIGHEST RETURN ADVERTISING DELIVERY METHOD ON EARTH.

That was a very good description of how Google is so powerful and rich. Is the patent for search ranking and index from Google the best? No one will ever come up with something else to beat it?

A lot of tech industry "rags to riches" folklore floated around in the early 2000s about how Brin and Page's Stanford PhD dissertation and research became the core of Google's search engine. It was described back then how a lot of Google's first search infrastructure basically consisted of shitty old used servers and desktops woven together with LANs and used IPC across the LANs to create a clustered computing resource. As in "Imagine a Beowulf Cluster of those."

Clearly Googles' searches and adwords are providing a good return on investment but maybe at this point others are catching up and Google's real strength is with selling its services? (perceived value)

I think my central point is gulag got funding and support from the alphabets to get an advantage over the competition.
To do that, they had to sell their soul and become even more efficient than the stazi state.

For some reason, this company can't seem to beat Google even though it has good "AI" light.
