Drink up! You'll live longer
« on: July 26, 2018, 05:36:17 am »
If I change my alcohol consumption in https://www.bankrate.com/calculators/retirement/life-age-expectancy-calculator.aspx from zero drinks a day to "Never more than 2 drinks/day"  I get an increase in 1.2 years.

2 drinks a day is optimal.

Less is a slight risk of earlier death.

More is a proportionate risk of earlier death.

It's interesting that France's per capita consumption is almost 50% higher than the U.S. and higher even than Russia, yet they live longer.   So there are many other factors besides drinking that account for life expectancy.  People in South Korea, Germany and the U.K. all live longer than the U.S. and they drink more.

The chart's caption below says the French drink the most wine, so maybe that's the reason.  I've read something about red wine being good for you.  The alcohol alone is probably bad -- as in vodka.

'Murica has a high-stress, status-obsessed, semi fascist, socially isolationist culture revolving around wealth acquisition.

Fascist as in submitting to authority at all levels of life as a pattern of life. (Not fascist as in "anyone not woke to current progressive causes is a Nazi.")

We're lonely, stressed out, grasping for moar, and worried that everyone else thinks we're a schmuck.

I would therefore expect the US to have a mediocre average life expectancy.

Having said that, Germany's life expectancy vs. alcohol consumed per person is EXTREMELY interesting.

What does alcohol consumption actually measure?  If it's escapism because life is so unpleasant I'm puzzled why the U.S. isn't even in the top 25 countries for drinking:  https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/who-drinks-the-most-alcohol-consumption-by-country.html

Maybe it's cultural and not escapism in some  countries like Ireland, Australia and Germany.  E.g. Germany makes such a big deal of Oktoberfest.  Escapism might be the reason in South Korea which is the only Asian country on the top 25 list.  It must be highly stressful to live next to North Korea.  Almost all of the top 10 countries are Eastern European where heavy drinking is probably a combination of cultural plus escapism.

Its not just that you drink, its what you drink.  Beer and wine are actually beneficial to you and they're not hard on your body, in moderation.  Hard liquor can really take a toll on the body.  Russians drink a lot of vodka.  That may contribute to their lower life expectancy.

Lifestyle plays an important role in maintaining health.  Life in the US is very stressful for the average person just trying to make a living.  Drinking definitely helps to take the edge off.

Interesting.
I don't think at all. I used to drink beer several years ago but quit due to high calories. Red wine and everything else makes me sick.
I can handle maybe a few ounces of good white whine and that's about it.

I prefer good buttermilk or some juice to alcohol.

I also drink buckets of tea and coffee.

Yeah, beer adds up when it comes to the waistline.  So do cookies.  Cookies vs. beer.  Sometimes I'll take the latter.
