This forum has its roots in the 1990s buildup of the IT field into what we know today and has been around since 2002. 10s of thousands of messages and threads about a variety of career, FTE, contract, and side gig issues and opportunities.

If you're as smart as the typical experienced IT professional, you have a critical mind that has a hard time staying engaged with pop culture and generic issues of the day. And you're WELL beyond the fanboy mentality of the young developer communities. Get some relief here.

Back in 1998 when I left they expanded in Woburn because Cambridge office got crowded, more than 2,500 employees... Do you know what is the current headcount?

I'm doing Data Management for a pharmaceutical company.  I actually did it 20 years ago and veered off into programming and forgot how much I liked it.  I 'clean' the data that comes in from the research sites (update the database).  There are a few other related positions I could probably transition to if I wanted.

From an IT perspective, the demand is for Oracle Clinical database programmers and SAS programmers.  They want you to have experience in clinical data - the old catch 22.  If someone was looking to break into it and really didn't have the clinical background, but had Oracle or SAS or even something close, and was willing to take a pay cut for awhile, I would suggest trying to get into a CRO (clinical research org - they contract to pharms and biotechs).  They pay less and have a huge turnover so have to take less experienced people and train them.

I think the newest thing is Remote Data Capture - technology at the sites where the staff enters the data instead of using paper that gets faxed or mailed(although I did a small pilot 20 years ago, before there were even pc's - we used dial-up terminals).

At my last job I could have changed over to the programming group if I really wanted.  I'm relieved to get away from it for now.

Last year I would have gone to this training if I could have afforded it:
I should have found out if I was eligible for training through unemployment.

I'm surprised there is so little training available here in NJ where the pharmaceutical industry is so prevalent.

Last time I got offered an FTE gig,  I was 31 years old.

Now,  I'm changing careers at age 59.  

When I was 31, they offered me about $11 an hour, with about 20% raises every year until I was even with the people around me.  I stayed there 10 years.  The first 9 years were some of the best years of my life.  

Now that I'm 59,  they are offering me...  $11 an hour.  

But a cup of coffee costs ten times what it did then.
